First Belizean Jedi Knight
Major Roberta Usher, an officer in the Belize Defence Force (BDF), recently made history as the first Belizean to graduate from the U.S. Army School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS). This accomplishment marks her as the first Belizean “Jedi Knight,” a term used to describe SAMS graduates due to their advanced strategic training. Major Usher’s achievement not only enhances the professional development of the BDF but also continues her family’s legacy of service, with her sister, Jane Usher, serving as the Director of the Police Training School. Sandra Bowden
Deputy Commissioner of Police
Sandra Bowden, a distinguished alumna of SCA’s class of 1989, has been appointed as Belize’s Deputy Commissioner of Police. Since joining the Belize Police Department in 1997, Bowden has demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to public service. Her career includes serving as Officer in Charge of the Coastal Executive Unit, overseeing both the San Pedro and Caye Caulker Police Formations from July 2015 to October 2016. In April 2024, as Assistant Commissioner of Police, she played a pivotal role in inaugurating the Vista Del Mar Police Booth in Ladyville, enhancing community security. Bowden’s promotion to Deputy Commissioner reflects her unwavering dedication to law enforcement and her significant contributions to the safety and well-being of Belizean communities. New Doctor on the Block
Shelby completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama. She then attended medical school at American University of the Caribbean and prepares to graduate as a part of the Class of 2025. As the next step in her career as a new doctor, Shelby recently matched into the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency program at Kern Medical in Bakersfield, California. Miss Universe Belize 2024
Halima Hoy, our esteemed alumna, made history as Miss Universe Belize 2024, using her platform to champion health and wellness. That same year, she launched Healthy Belize, an initiative dedicated to promoting well-being across the nation. Through collaborations with organizations like UNICEF, the Ministry of Health and Wellness, and the Belize Cancer Society, she has helped organize impactful health fairs and various initiatives. Beyond advocacy, Halima and her husband are dedicated philanthropists, giving back to the Dorothy Menzies Children’s Home, supporting students at St. John Vianney and Grace Primary School through back-to-school donations, and even sponsoring children in Bangladesh.
